Dental Crowns Thornhill
Dental crowns are a commonly used restorative solution for damaged, discoloured, or cracked teeth. They are designed to fit over the affected tooth, protecting it from further damage while restoring its shape and function. Crowns can also be used to replace or protect a tooth following a dental extraction or other restorative procedure.
The Role of Dental Crowns in Restoring Teeth
Dental crowns, sometimes referred to as “caps,” are used to restore teeth that are weakened, broken, or at high risk of fracture. They are typically made from high-quality materials such as porcelain or noble metal alloys and are recommended when a significant portion of the natural tooth structure has been lost.
When might a Dental Crown be Recommended?
- A large filling has broken or failed
- Extensive tooth decay has weakened the structure
- Severe damage due to fracture or wear
- Tooth sensitivity caused by structural damage
- Cosmetic improvement, such as severe discoloration
- Protection following root canal treatment
- Cracked or chipped tooth surfaces
The Process of Getting a Dental Crown
The dental crown procedure begins with a consultation with one of our dentists. During the first visit, the tooth is prepared by reshaping its structure and an impression is taken. A temporary crown is then placed to protect the tooth while the final restoration is being fabricated in a dental laboratory. At the second visit, the permanent crown is tried in, adjusted for fit and comfort, and then securely cemented into place.
Once completed, the crown blends naturally with your existing teeth, restoring both aesthetics and full chewing function while strengthening the treated tooth.
