Plaque is a sticky film that adheres to the surface of the teeth and contains large amounts of bacteria. Over time, plaque can harden through mineralization and become what is known as calculus (tartar).
Plaque and calculus act as irritants to the tissues in the mouth. The body’s response to these irritants leads to inflammation of the gums, which may result in gum bleeding, gum recession, and eventually bone loss around the teeth. These changes are characteristic of periodontal (gum) disease.
The earliest stage of periodontal disease is gingivitis, which is reversible and commonly presents with red, swollen gums and bleeding during brushing or flossing. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, a more advanced and destructive condition that leads to deeper gum damage, bone loss, and potentially tooth loss.
Scaling and root planing are the most common non-surgical treatments for periodontal disease. Scaling removes plaque and calculus from the tooth surfaces both above and below the gum line, while root planing smooths the root surfaces and removes remaining deposits, helping the gums heal and reattach.
When significant buildup is present, the area is usually numbed to ensure patient comfort. Both ultrasonic (sonic) instruments and manual hand instruments are used during the procedure. Ultrasonic tools break down larger deposits of plaque and tartar, while hand instruments are used to remove residual buildup and thoroughly clean all tooth surfaces.
Some sensitivity or mild soreness may occur for a few days after treatment, but this can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain relief medication.
A follow-up visit with Promenade Village Dental is usually scheduled approximately four weeks after treatment to assess healing and improvement in gum health. Additional maintenance visits are typically recommended at regular intervals, often every 3 to 6 months, depending on individual needs. The goal of treatment is to eliminate active infection, reduce periodontal pocket depth, and preserve bone support around the teeth.
