Teeth Whitening Thornhill
A cosmetic dental treatment called teeth whitening can lighten the shade of your teeth and help remove stains or discoloration caused by aging, certain medications, or lifestyle habits such as drinking coffee, tea, or wine, as well as smoking. It is important to understand that whitening results are not permanent, so occasional touch-up treatments may be needed to maintain your desired shade.
Teeth whitening can be performed either in-office or with a take-home system. At our clinic, our dentists often take before-and-after photos to monitor your progress and compare the improvement in tooth shade throughout the treatment.
In-office Teeth Whitening
This treatment is a fast and effective way to achieve a noticeably brighter smile, capable of lightening teeth by approximately six to ten shades. It uses a professional-strength, light-activated whitening gel (typically hydrogen peroxide) and usually takes between 30 and 90 minutes. Depending on your goals, more than one visit may be recommended to achieve the ideal shade.
Take-home Teeth Whitening
For this option, our dentists take an impression of your teeth to create custom-made whitening trays. You will receive a professional bleaching gel (usually containing hydrogen peroxide) along with instructions on how to apply it in the trays and how long to wear them each day. It is essential to follow the prescribed amount carefully, as overuse of whitening gel may cause gum irritation or sensitivity.
Risks and Precautions
Both in-office and at-home whitening treatments may cause temporary tooth sensitivity in some patients. This sensitivity usually resolves within a few days after completing treatment. Teeth whitening is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding individuals as a precautionary measure.
